Sustainable is Beautiful

Ekoa Café, an airy and tranquil retreat from São Paulo bustle, occupies a house with Spanish Colonial-inspired architecture in Vila Madalena.

Like other cafés and bistros in this charming district, Ekoa serves healthy dishes in a pleasant ambience, but with an outstanding focus on sustainable design and practices and a diverse range of options in vegan, organic and gluten-free cuisine.

The dining area sets the sustainable scene, with walls covered with raw earth, certified wood tables, lamps made from used coffee filters or ecologically collected bamboo, a staircase made from salvaged lampposts and biosynthetic wood details in the counter.

Ekoa has launched several interactive ideas, such as the shared coffee, when you can leave a coffee ordered for the next customer along with a positive message, and a mural on which the most assiduous customer of the month can post a story.

A great stop in São Paulo for travelers with celiac disease and vegetarians, Ekoa has all dishes on its menu marked with a V for vegan, a crossed G for gluten-free and an O for organic.

The comforting and exciting properties of soup are acknowledged in the names of the ones served at the café. The Soothing Soup ("Calmante", R$14,30) is a pumpkin cream with basil and ginger. Mixed greens, queijo de coalho, sugarcane molasses and coriander seeds go into the Energizing Soup ("Energizante", R$10,20).

Several healthy twists on Brazil's bar hearty food make up the Bar Talk ("Conversa de Balcão") list, with the baked eggplant turnovers (spinach dough filled with eggplant, ricotta and Brazil nuts, R$5) as one of the highlights.

The pastry used in the pies (about R$10) is made from rolled oats, yogurt and whole wheat flour. Some of the best choices for a more filling meal are the organic vegetable lasagna (R$17,20) and the quinoa escondidinho, or casserole (R$16,80).

For dessert, one of the great choices is cuca de banana (R$5,20). There's also creamy brigadeiro with cupuaçu topping.

Ekoa serves many coffee-based drinks, such as Ekoa Delícia (milk, coffee and Nutella, R$7). There are also many types of tea, smoothies and juices, caipirinhas made from organic cachaça.

The café has joined the Água na Jarra ("Water in the Pitcher", www.aguanajarra.com.br), a movement aimed at doing away with the consumption of water in plastic bottles at restaurants. But bottled mineral water is also available.

Ekoa also has branches in Campinas, SP
